Common Problems & Issues
Death WobbleHigh Severity

Like the TJ before it, the JK is plagued by death wobble — violent front-end shaking triggered by a road imperfection at highway speeds. Lifted JKs are especially susceptible. The factory track bar, ball joints, and steering stabilizer all contribute.

FrequencyVery Common
Affected YearsAll JK years
Est. Repair Cost$300 – $1,500
Recommended Fix
Start with the track bar and its frame mount. Inspect all steering components. A heavy-duty aftermarket track bar, fresh ball joints, and a dual steering stabilizer setup is a comprehensive fix for lifted rigs.
TIPM FailureHigh Severity

The TIPM is the JK's central electrical hub, and it's notorious for failing. Symptoms include a fuel pump that won't prime, random horn honking, windows or wipers operating on their own, and electrical gremlins across multiple systems.

FrequencyVery Common (2007–2014)
Affected YearsPrimarily 2007–2014
Est. Repair Cost$600 – $1,200
Recommended Fix
Confirm diagnosis with a scan tool. Rebuild services offer refurbished TIPMs for around $250–$400 vs. a new dealer unit. Chrysler extended the warranty on many TIPM units — check if yours qualifies.
Front Differential Pinion Seal LeakHigh Severity

The front differential pinion seal on Dana 30 and Dana 44 front axles is a well-documented JK leak point. Gear oil escapes past the seal and can drip onto the brake caliper — a potential safety issue if left unattended long enough.

FrequencyCommon
Est. Repair Cost$150 – $400
Recommended Fix
Replace the pinion seal and check the differential fluid level and condition. Inspect the brake caliper and rotor for gear oil contamination — replace if soaked. Use a quality seal from National or Timken.
3.8L V6 Oil Consumption & OverheatingHigh Severity

The 3.8L V6 found in 2007–2011 JKs burns oil, runs hot in stop-and-go traffic, and has a reputation for head gasket failures on neglected examples. The 2012+ Pentastar 3.6L is significantly more reliable.

FrequencyVery Common
Affected Years2007–2011
Est. Repair Cost$500 – $3,000
Recommended Fix
Check oil level every fill-up. Install an aftermarket temperature gauge to monitor closely. Upgrade the radiator and consider an oil catch can. Many owners swap to a 3.6L Pentastar on high-mileage 3.8s.
Evap Canister & Fuel System CodesMedium Severity

JKs commonly throw P0455 and P0456 evaporative emission codes. The gas cap, purge valve, and vent valve are common culprits. These will trigger a check engine light and can cause inspection failures.

FrequencyCommon
Est. Repair Cost$20 – $400
Recommended Fix
Start with a new OEM-style locking gas cap. If the code persists, check the purge solenoid and vapor canister vent valve.
Rear Axle Shaft FailureMedium Severity

Under hard off-road use, the stock Dana 44 rear axle shafts on Rubicon models can snap. Non-Rubicon Sport and Sahara models have the weaker Dana 35, which is even more prone to failure with larger tires.

FrequencyModerate (off-road use)
Est. Repair Cost$200 – $800
Recommended Fix
Upgrade to aftermarket chromoly axle shafts from Yukon Gear or Alloy USA if running 35"+ tires or wheeling hard. Consider a full axle upgrade on a Sport/Sahara with serious off-road plans.
3.6L Pentastar Cam Follower WearMedium Severity

The 3.6L Pentastar V6 (2012–2018) has a known issue with rocker arm cam followers wearing prematurely, often presenting as a ticking noise on startup. Can lead to camshaft damage if ignored.

FrequencyModerate
Affected Years2012–2018
Est. Repair Cost$500 – $1,500
Recommended Fix
Use full synthetic oil and change at 5,000-mile intervals. At startup ticking, inspect immediately. Ensure any replacement uses the updated revised follower part number from Chrysler.
Door & Window Seal LeaksLow Severity

JK door weatherstripping deteriorates over time, allowing water to enter the cabin, especially at the top corners of the doors. A common complaint in heavy rain.

FrequencyCommon
Est. Repair Cost$40 – $200
Recommended Fix
Replace the foam door corner seals (the "hockey pucks"). Full weatherstrip kits are available from Rugged Ridge and Steele Rubber. A worthwhile fix before winter.
NV241 Transfer Case Chain WearLow Severity

The NV241 transfer case can develop a slip or rattle from a worn chain at higher mileage. Symptoms include popping out of 4WD or a rhythmic chain noise in 4-low.

FrequencyModerate (high mileage)
Est. Repair Cost$400 – $1,200
Recommended Fix
Change transfer case fluid regularly with ATF+4. A chain and sprocket replacement kit is available for rebuilding in-place. Severe wear may require a reman unit.
