Jeep TJ Won't Start? Here's the Order to Check Things

A field-tested crank-no-start triage path for the 4.0L, built from actually chasing one down harness to sensor.

Crank-no-start on a 4.0L TJ is almost never one thing — it's usually a chain of small failures that all have to be ruled out in order. Working it randomly wastes time and parts money. Below is the same triage sequence I used on my own '97, moving from the fastest checks to the deepest ones.
Triage rule: fix the fastest, cheapest thing to rule out first. Don't replace a $200 part to test a $10 theory.

Stage 1: Fuel Delivery

Check First

Is fuel actually reaching the rail?

Stage 2: Spark

Check Second

Is the coil actually firing?

Stage 3: Cam/Crank Sync

Check Third — Often the Real Culprit

Does the PCM see a valid sync signal?

If fuel and spark both check out individually but the engine still won't fire, the PCM likely isn't getting a clean, correctly-timed signal from both the cam and crank sensors at the same time. This is the stage that gets skipped most often because each sensor can test "fine" in isolation while the sync between them is still off.

From the bench I rebuilt my harness and replaced every major sensor on this exact hunt, and the sync signal between cam and crank was still the last thing standing. If you've already thrown parts at fuel and spark with no luck, stop guessing and go straight to verifying cam/crank sync and ASD relay behavior with a scope or scan tool before buying anything else.

Corrosion at this connector is one of the most common causes of an intermittent or total no-start on the 4.0L. Worth checking and replacing early since it's inexpensive relative to the diagnostic time it saves.

ASD Relay
Controls fuel pump, injectors, and ignition coil power

A weak or failing ASD relay can mimic a fuel or spark problem, because it powers both circuits. If you're chasing your tail between fuel and spark theories, test this relay directly before going further.

Needed to actually see cam/crank correlation, not just codes

A basic code reader isn't enough for Stage 3 — you need live data to watch cam and crank signals in real time while cranking. This is the tool that finally isolates a sync problem instead of guessing at it.
